Luna Lovegood. The quirky, off centre 4th year who was introduced during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has spawned some interesting comments from Quibbler readers. Luna is the daughter of Mr. Lovegood, one of the editors-in-name of The Quibbler. She is a 4th year student in Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and sports long, blond hair, blue eyes, and a cheery (if slightly moony) disposition. Luna loves Quidditch, humming, reading the puzzles in the Quibbler, and studying. She has a penchant for saying things completely out of the ordinary, but like many who are considered loony, often sports the most correct observations. Here is how some Quibbler readers voiced their opinions: Moira Moonwatcher writes: We just love Luna! She was a brilliant new character to add to the Harry Potter line-up of friends! What great taste! What beautiful fashion sense! What perfect comedic timing! And that name! What a lovely girl! Society for Astrologers Everywhere writes: We think Luna comes to represent the brightest, most beautiful star in the Harry Potter world. A girl obviously driven by the stars, we feel she is a Virgo–pure and clean. Otherwise, she’s guided by Aquarius, strong yet weak. Or perhaps a Gemini, with two sides to her obviously talented personality. Or perhaps a Scorpio, with hidden fire underneath. Or definitely a Libra, with a balance of... The editors apologize to the Society for Astrologers Everywhere, but due to space constraints, certain portions of the article had to be clipped. But we’re sure you knew that already. S.P.E.L.L (Society for the Protection and Elevation of Luna Lovegood) writes: Luna was a fascinating character to add the Harry Potter series. We just wish she’d been featured more! We know that she has the potential to become one of the greatest characters of the saga (look how she helped Harry through those rough times he faced!) And she knew the meanings of things like the thestrals and the veil. Please...more Luna. I...um...WE beg of you...more Luna! Weasley Watcher writes: Was it just me, or did Luna Lovegood have her eye on a certain Weasley? She certainly went through pains to make sure she was the one handing Pigwidgeon’s cage back to Ron. She laughed stupidly at all his jokes. And, she showed up in that Gryffindor hat for that first Quidditch match Ron played in. Plus, she called him “Ronald.” Not even Hermione has ever called him that! Then, she goes around humming “Weasley is our King” for no particular reason–before it became the official Weasley Anthem! She even managed to stay close to that particular Weasley during the battles in the Ministry of Magic. There is something suspicious going on in that Loony Lovegood’s mind. She appears to be interfering with certain pairings which are fated. This particular Weasley watcher does not particularly care for the shenanigans of a year four Ravenclaw who’s obviously thinking above her level. Random Observer Writes: Luna Lovegood was a very unique, thoughtful character to join the group in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She seemed to be that kind of observer whom no one listens to, but whom everyone should have, because she ends up being the most insightful of anyone. Luna understood certain important concepts, like Death, long before Harry or any of the main characters did. And she was able to explain them without appearing traumatized or bitter about her experiences. Luna was a bit like the prophets that appear in great epic sagas, whose words do not make sense until the person who hears them has actually lived them. Then, all of a sudden, they are the most brilliant minds around. Luna also added more to the muddled relationships within the book. Perhaps she will give Ron Weasley the attention he has so long deserved. Whatever her relationship, Luna will most certainly appear in the stories once again. Her presence ties Gryffindor to Ravenclaw, leading perhaps to the unification of the Houses to which the Sorting Hat appeared to be pointing. Luna’s role may not be as strong as Hermione’s, but she will be a force to at least be watched in upcoming novels. W.A.H.P (Women Abound in Harry Potter) writes: Finally, we have a book! No more male dominated society, with Luna Lovegood we have finally outnumbered the male portion of this friendship! Ron and Harry...they’ve always outnumbered Hermione (and Ginny). But Luna finally tips the scales in favor of women everywhere! We think that the book should be renamed “Hermione and the Order of the Phoenix”, and that Luna, Ginny, Lily, Minerva, Bellatrix, Tonks, and Molly should grace the cover! Who cares about that little scarhead? Witches Rule! Professor Tinker, Morris School of Thought and Learning writes: Luna was an interesting character...but was she a rational one? Her observations seemed off-the-cuff, to say the least. She had nothing to support her comments or her thoughts. She just seemed to spew answers into thin air without any reason...and without considering social etiquette. Divination seems a sketchy topic in these books, and Luna was one step away from that. Perhaps she’s just there to throw people off. Of course, that is my opinion. General Fan writes: Whatever her purpose, Luna Lovegood was a humorous and neat character. She livened up a rather dark book, made things like thestrals seem humorous, and alleviated a great deal of the tense atmosphere between people. I loved Luna’s character because she was kooky, honest, and had interesting, informative observations. I don’t know what her purpose will be in the future, but I hope I get to see her again. |
