All Hallow’s Eve

Hogwarts, an undisclosed location in the UK–As All Hallow’s Eve draws near, students at one particular wizarding school are preparing anxiously. But one of them might have to prepare a bit more than the rest.

“Halloween has always been an–er, interesting holiday for him, to say the least,” claims Ronald Weasley, speaking of his friend and classmate, famed Boy-Who-Lived Harry Potter.

Potter, the famous survivor of an attack by You-Know-Who, has a very unique history with All Hallow’s Eve, ever since his first year at the wizarding school.

“Well, his first year, he had a battle with a troll,” remarks Hermione Granger, who has known Potter since that time. “That was also the day that he and I, and Ron, all became friends. So Halloween is an important day, for both me and Harry.”

Following that remarkable battle, in which Potter and Weasley knocked out an adult male mountain troll with his own club, a series of other, rather interesting events have followed on Halloween night.

“Our second year, we went to a Deathday party–and it was then we discovered writing on the wall, talking about the Chamber of Secrets,” claims Mr. Weasley. Information about the Chamber of Secrets incident was recently disclosed, after the revelation that You-Know-Who had returned, alive, into the wizarding world. A basilisk was found to be the culprit, controlled by a magical diary enchanted by You-Know-Who’s school age self.

Potter’s third year didn’t differ much from his previous two; his dormitory was attacked by the infamous Prisoner of Azkaban Sirius Black. In his fourth year on Halloween, Potter was chosen to participate in the Triwizarding Tournament, which he ultimately won conjointly with now deceased sixth year Cedric Diggory.

All of the Halloween occurrences have foreshadowed dangerous battles which Potter would have to face, including various encounters with incarnations of You-Know-Who. This has some speculating that Halloween is a cursed day for The Boy Who Lived.

Especially considering the most famous event in Potter’s life to have taken place on Halloween.

“Well, er...you know...his mum and dad were killed by You-Know...er...V-Voldemort on Halloween, when Harry was just a wee tyke,” says Rubeus Hagrid, the Care of Magical Creatures Professor at Hogwarts, “it was the day he got his scar. So its just been bad for him, all around.”

Not everyone is convinced, however, that Halloween has placed a curse on Potter. “Just because all those things occurred does not mean they’re related to Halloween,” defends Ms. Granger, a Prefect at Hogwarts and top of her class. “They are some interesting coincidences, but that is all they are. After all, nothing spectacular happened to us last year on Halloween–we barely even noticed that it came. All of this superstition business is a lot of nonsense.”

But many others will keep a wary eye on Halloween, whether or not it has been proven a blessing or a curse. “I’m not sure that we won’t worry about it, after all,” says Mr. Weasley. “Just be to safe, we’ve got our charms prepared.”

And Mr. Potter himself? He doesn’t seem quite so divided as his friends. “Some bad things have happened, like what happened to my parents, and some good things have happened, like becoming friends with Hermione. I suppose I’ll just have to wait for it to come, and deal with what happens when it happens. That is the only thing I can do right now. Halloween will be no different from every other day in the year, at least not for me.”
