GOF SPOTLIGHT: Predrag Bjelac
A Spooky Slavian
A Spooky Slavian
Predrag Bjelac inherits the role of Durmstrang Headmaster Karkaroff
When Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is released in November of 2005, audiences can expect to see a blend of the good and the bad—but more particularly the bad, as muggles are finally introduced—personally—to You-Know-Who and his group of supporters, the Death Eaters.
One such personality appears in the form of the shady Headmaster of the Durmstrang school, Igor Karkaroff. Karkaroff, portrayed in the movie by Slavian actor Predrag Bjelac, was ambiguous in his loyalties, but appears suspect all the same.
Predrag Bjelac (or Pedja Bjelac, as he is sometimes credited), the muggle who will be behind the mask, was born on June 30, 1962, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The majority of his career, at least in English-based films, has been categorized by many small or assisting roles, including notable appearances in films such as “Children of Dune” “Harrison’s Flowers”, and most recently, “Eurotrip.”
Karkaroff will be his first major film role in an English big-budget production, and also his first foray into the wizarding world.
“He certainly does look the part, don’ he?” remarks Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. “The real Karkaroff was na’ any spookier.”
Professor Severus Snape, who has a strange tie with the missing Durmstrang Headmaster, agrees.
“Though I would not put the reference in exactly the same form as Hagrid, I do agree that the gentleman chosen to play Karkaroff exudes that same personality as the real Headmaster. Watching his character interact with the talented Alan Rickman [the actor who plays Professor Snape] should be intriguing.”
Securing the role of Karkaroff has made the Slavian actor a hot commodity in Europe; he has been interviewed several times by his local press.
At this moment, the whereabouts of the true Headmaster Karkaroff are unknown, but many suspect he was connected with You-Know-Who in one way or another. Others believe he betrayed both the Ministry AND He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
"I don't know exactly what has happened with Igor," remarks Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, "But I will say that I would not want to be in his situation right now."
The Quibbler will continue to keep you updated on the newest information for cast and crew of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, as well as the status of all wizards declared missing in action.
